NEXUS CENTER

The Nexus Center is a 169,440 square foot premier tournament-based recreation play facility opening in the winter of 2020 that will exist as a true epicenter for sports in the Mohawk Valley. The Nexus Center will primarily be utilized for ice hockey, boxed lacrosse, soccer, and any other field sports that can be performed on a 200 x 85-foot playing surface. Each one of these ice sheets will have the functionality allowing them to transform into field-based surfaces. In addition, the Nexus Center will feature over 25 locker rooms, commercial office space, college classroom space, retail space, food and beverage services, and other multi-purpose training space. The Nexus Center will also be connected to the current Adirondack Bank Center, providing essentially four surfaces for sports tournaments.

Based on findings, the Nexus Center will house approximately 480 players per hockey tournament and 640 players per lacrosse/soccer tournament. The Nexus Center is projected to host 24 hockey and 24 lacrosse tournaments each year. The proposed Nexus Center will focus on out-of-town tournament participants year-round, while simultaneously catering to local athletes during the week for practices and training. When the facility is not actively being used for a tournament or other event, it will function as a community sports and recreation amenity to fill voids for the existing sports organizations, high schools, and colleges in the area. The connectivity of the Nexus Center to the Adirondack Bank Center (formerly known as the Utica Memorial Auditorium) also enhances its overall regional impact and scope.

The goals for the Nexus Center align themselves with those of the Mohawk Valley, focusing primarily on future development. In conjunction with the development of a new healthcare center, Harbor Point, sports & entertainment district, Bagg’s Square, and more, the Nexus Center has the ability to catalyze the region and advance not only sports and entertainment, but also economic development as a whole.
